School Awareness Campaign

Location: Bedford, Nova Scotia | Start Date: 20100101
Organisation: Bedford South School

Project Description

Bedford South School is celebrating Healthy Schools Day with an awareness campaign.  The following text was published in the school newsletter to parents on Wednesday April 14, 2010, and students will announce the special day in the morning announcements of April 26, 2010.
“Monday, April 26, is Healthy Schools Day in Canada – Journée des écoles saines du Canada. It is an important day because school buildings can affect the health and learning ability of students.   It is an extra special day in Nova Scotia because this province has led the way in Canada.  For nearly twenty years, we have been improving our schools’ health – making our schools the best they can  be.  That means everyone in this building has been better off without even knowing it. Our school board chooses less toxic cleaning materials so we don’t breathe in toxic chemicals. Also, Scent-Smart programs are in place across Nova Scotia in hospitals, offices and most schools.

Healthy Schools Day organizers are pleased to say that other parts of North America are catching up! Now, the important part is to keep our schools healthy. So let’s celebrate Healthy Schools Day at Bedford South with schools right across Canada.

“Leave your scents at home on Monday and every day for a better, healthier school.”

Statement in Parliament on Healthy Schools Day in Canada

Location: Ottawa | Start Date: 20100101
Organisation: MP Halifax West

Project Description

Hon. Geoff Regan (Halifax West, Lib.):

Mr. Speaker, today is Healthy Schools Day in Canada. Students, teachers, parents, and others in our school communities, are focused today on improving the indoor environmental quality in school buildings. Healthy Schools Day was established by Canadians for a Safe Learning Environment in Halifax West, and partner organizations across Canada.

This group has been very successful in helping to improve the condition of school buildings and raising awareness of products and practices used in schools. This means that students and staff have a safer and healthier place to learn and work.

I ask the House to join me in congratulating CASLE on its work. I encourage all members to join me in promoting Healthy Schools Day.
