Healthy and Sustainable Buildings

Location: Chilliwack, BC | Start Date: 03/09/2011
Organisation: University of Calgary

Project Description

The University of Calgary’s Faculty of Environmental Design is conducting a workshop in Chilliwack, BC with Lee & de Ridder Architects, Calgary.

Our workshop, called Healthy and Sustainable Buildings will instruct 30 registrants about Healthy Building Design and Construction. Included will be demonstrations of new wall and roof panels that do not offgass, do not grow mould, and that save energy. These Structurally Insulated Panels (SIP) are made from magnesium oxide board sandwiching rigid foam insulation. SIP panels can replace gypsum board in any building, including schools, to prevent mould growth, reduce energy costs and help reduce chemical offgassing from building materials.

Participants will include representatives from the local native bands in the lower mainland of BC, CMHC, local building officials, as well as builders. The workshop is hosted by a local builder, Lacey Developments Ltd.

Videos and Tips for Healthy Schools

Location: Manitoba | Start Date: 20110327
Organisation: Children's Health and Environment Partnership

Project Description

Children’s Health and Environment Partnership (CHEP)is featuring Healthy Schools Day in Canada information on our website and promoted the event in the e-newsletter in November 2010 and March 2011. www.childrensenvironment.ca

Participants/students are encouraged to make videos about healthy school issues and submit them to be posted on CHEP’s website. CHEP staff can assist with interviews or video production.

CHEP member, The Green Action Centre, offered some easy tips to get the gears in motion:

  • Encourage more walking/biking/idle-free zones – fewer cars in the area means less exhaust!
  • Prevent dirt and dust from spreading by designating outdoor clothing areas.
  • Plan a spring clean-up indoors or outdoors
  • Encourage school to implement the use of non-toxic cleaners

War on grow-ops

Location: Banff | Start Date: 20120328
Organisation: U of Calgary

Project Description

Prof. Tang Lee will present how these grow-ops will affect the health of occupants in buildings. Of particular concern is the use of pesticides, and the growth of moulds in these places. Although highly unlikely that there is a grow-op in a school, there may be greenhouses and large numbers of plants that can also cause the same unhealthy conditions as grow-ops. This presentation will discuss how to remediate the facility from the contaminants such as chemicals and moulds.

What is the Environmental Health Association of Ontario (EHA Ontario)?

We are a non-profit, charitable organization which provides support and information to its members with environmental sensitivities.  We also strive to raise awareness within the medical community, educational institutions and to the general public. Our goal is also to prevent further cases of environmental sensitivity from occurring.

The purpose of EHA Ontario is to provide support and gain respect and understanding for the many men, women, and children suffering from toxic chemical injury (i.e. from pesticides, volatile organic chemicals, heavy metals, etc), Environmental Sensitivities and other related disabilities.  We strive to create public awareness by providing education for the full recognition of environmentally induced illnesses, while promoting mutual respect between fellow human beings and encouraging all members of the community to participate and create a world in which there is no threat of toxic injury.

EHAO provides information to members, students and educational institutions at their request on Environmental Sensitivity, and information on resources for better air quality and coping with this illness.
